Halloween is not necessarily a ‘holiday’ that I get in to. Even as a child I dreaded dressing up. I liked the candy, though, and due to my sweet tooth I swear I gain 5 lbs every Halloween. I try to buy candy I don’t like but the kids always come home with my favorites. 🙁 However, I am excited to meet all the kids in the neighborhood as they come to our home for the first time to trick or treat!
As most of you that are Catholic know, what we celebrate is All Saints Day and in doing so we commemorate those that we love who have gone on to be with our Father in Heaven. Luminaries are made in remembrance of a family member or friend and the lined up along the courtyard of the church. The idea of a ‘saint’ has always been so out of reach for me but ever since I’ve been to St. Martha’s and experienced their tradition with the luminaries and recognizing that we are all called to be saints it brings home what the Catholic church teaches in regards to the universal church and gathering as one with ‘all the angels and saints’ in heaven around the banquet table.
Tomorrow, November 1st, is All Saints Day and ironically My Daily Bread had a day focused on recognizing our help in the saints. I would like to close this day’s blog with the prayer that is given:
In God’s saints I will find sincere friends and strong helpers before God…they have a genuine interest in my welfare, and they sincerely desire to help me. O holy saints of God, I honor you for the greatness which you achieved by your grand love for God. Help me with my daily needs, but especially in loving God’s holy will in all things. Amen
