I’m dipping back into the past here a bit and including a fun little prose I wrote in 2006. I came upon it as I was going through a folder of various writing projects. I thought I’d share to offer something hopefully amusing for our Friday:
The devil created Prada to prove something to God.
The Lord said, “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
and the devil laughed. “Fishers of men? Might be so, but then they will only care about what the men can do FOR them.”
The Lord said, “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.”
and the devil laughed. “They will only treat others with just enough courtesy to get ahead in the world, and even then they will only offer this least bit of ‘goodness’ to those that are just like them.”
The Lord said, “Do not worry about the clothes on your back or the food you will eat. I am the bread of life, he who comes to me shall not suffer.”
and the devil laughed and THAT’S when he created Prada. “You think they can live in this world, sustained on the promise of someone they can not even see? You think they can live in this world satisfied that they will be taken care of when so many others suffer? You, my Lord, you cast me down a long time ago but you gave me the freedom to roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls and I intend to make the most of what you’ve given me even if your own children won’t.”
“Watch as the years turn into decades and more and more of your children turn away from your promises, seeking solid and immediate gratification in what can be SEEN before their eyes and HELD in their hands. In these things I will offer the ecstasy of accomplishment and achievement and taint them with greed and dissatisfaction.”
“More and more I will create THINGS to get them in a frenzy to do what it takes to get MORE because the ecstasy I offer them is a drug that will seep into the soul you created.” The devil looked at God and sighed. “Even though you are the only one who can offer them this ecstasy in truest form, I thank you for not taking away the glimpse of its memory I had in heaven so I could offer it to these poor souls to keep me company.”
And the Lord said, “Above all things, LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.”
the devil’s laughter turned to hysteria. “Oh, Lord,” he ventures with condemnation. “You say my time with your children on earth is short but I beg to differ. I believe I can still win this battle. You see, I might not have the rule of heaven but I’ve made the most of the kingdom you’ve granted me in hell.”
The devil shakes his head in pity. “Lord, Jesus, Holy Spirit, whichever you are, if I have their minds and hearts how will you ever retrieve their souls? They are already beginning to look to the creator of these THINGS…and worshiping me. It might be slow, but I have some of their souls. Give me more time and they will all be mine.”
And then a deep, strong voice reverberated from the depth of heaven to the tip of hell, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.”
And the Lord looked with pity at the devil and the devil turned his head away. “From the moment of conception in their mother’s womb their soul is formed and that soul is the very reflection of me. I am forgiveness. I am mercy. I am strength. I am hope. I am love. And because I love them I have given them free will. They are created in my image but I will not make them love me. I will trust that they will listen to the very heart I created in them and in that they will SEE me and FEEL me and FOLLOW me.”
The devil turned to leave. Hesitating, he turned back to the Lord. “There is always Paris.”
