Did anyone watch the sitcom “One Day at a Time”? It was the one about a divorced mother who had two daughters at home and a nosey maintenance man that always seemed to be hanging around? (Which is a bit creepy if you think about it now! lol) I used to think that show was so risqué and scandalous, along with Three’s Company. 😉

This sitcom comes to mind because 30something years later and I finally get the significance of the title “One Day at a Time”. As a little girl it was an amusing show and in reality so much of what the ‘mom’ was going through was way over my head.

Monday night I met with a group of women at Wellsprings Village to start up a monthly program. These women are from all walks of life having come to Wellsprings to get their life back on track. Just in the group I met with there was a chef, a therapist (rape counselor), nurse PA, etc. These women had suffered an onslaught of one situation after another after another that led them destitute and no where else to go.

As we sat in our group and talked about our lives there was the one single thread – everyone had suffered some form (if not many forms ) of abuse early on in their life leaving them to feel unworthy. This proved to play a role in the spiraling downfall of their life which led them to where they are today.

We discussed how life can be so overwhelming it causes us to freeze and shut down. Sometimes life takes a turn and it nothing looks or feels familiar and it feels as if the road ahead is long, dismal and with no end. This is when it is important to take one step at a time, one moment at a time, one day at a time.

These women have the sanctity of Wellsprings Village to pick themselves up and focus on those steps to get going on the new and unfamiliar path.

When your situation seems so overwhelming and filled with too many steps to take to get out remember crawled before you walked and walked before you ran. Give yourself a break, slow down, and focus on one day at a time giving yourself a pat on the back at the end of each day with what you achieved.
